The Vegan Comedian – A Follow Up

Go Vegan CartoonSeveral months ago I released a series of “Vegan Comedian…” videos on YouTube, and in these videos I did what could only be correlated to as “Standup comedy.”

The so called “jokes” that I came up with were meant to poke fun at vegans and meat-eaters alike:  “Vegan Alcoholics,” “Vegan Abortions,” and “Rotten Meat,” all the videos addressed awkward, and bizarre conversations that I’ve had over the years.  (None of them by choice.) The idea behind the videos was to lampoon the dynamics between vegans and meat-eaters—and I thought a corny, try-hard, hack, standup comedian would be a fun medium to use.  I added in the fake lack track to make it more fun, and I timed it just a second off just to add to the cringe-factor.  It was all in good spirits.

In the description of the video I had a little paragraph stating that it was filmed with a laugh track and that it was just for satire purposes, and then I added in a list of real comedians who also happen to be vegan.  Originally, the videos were titled “Live Performance – The Vegan Comedian…” but combined with the laugh track, it became too obvious, and there were other versions were I really hammed it up for the camera, but those didn’t work either.

I am a vegan; however, I am not a “Live out Loud,” vegan.  I do write articles, and post videos, about veganism, but in real life I often don’t talk about veganism.  None of my friends even knew I was vegan until several months afterward.  In fact, the majority of the time that I do talk about vegan/vegetarian/pescetarianism is when I’m talking to vets about how a healthy diet can help with PTSD—other times are when I’m specifically asked, or when I think someone’s experiencing a problem that a vegan/vegetarian diet could address (cue research on diabetes, heart disease, etc).   But over the years, as stated, conversations have happened—as they do to every vegan, and meat-eater, alike—that I thought would be fun to talk about and parody.

Anyways…people are watching the videos and thinking they’re real—that I’m some guy really trying to be a comedian, and that I added in the laugh track to pull one over on people.  The intent was to create this type of ‘try-hard, hack comedian’ but I figured that people would watch the videos, maybe think a little about the meat-eater/vegan dynamics (from both sides); laugh a little; cringe a little, then read the description and be in on the joke.  The videos came out exactly as planned; the only thing I didn’t plan on was that so few people would read the video descriptions.  One video has gone viral on Reddit (twice) and the three videos combined have been shared over 3,000 times and have gotten over 150,000 views.  Go figure.  People think they’re real—or created with real standup comedy intent.

In the last week I’ve gotten a dozen emails from angry people (actually a majority of angry comedians) saying things like: “You suck.  You’ll never make it as a comedian using a fake laugh track.”  And let’s not forget All-Captials-Guy: “I’VE BEEN DOING COMEDY FOR SIX YEARS.  YOU’RE A HACK AND YOUR STUPID VIDEO HAS MORE VIEWS THAN ALL OF MINE COMBINED.  WE ALL CAN TELL THAT YOUR [sic] USING A LAUGH TRACK NO ONE’S BUYING THAT IT WAS A REAL AUDIENCE.  WE’RE LAUGHING AT YOU NOT WITH YOU.  FUCK YOURSELF YOU STUPID VEGAN.”

And then of course there are the other comedians who tried to ‘trip me up’ or ‘catch me in a lie.’  I got three emails from comedians asking questions like, “Great audience, bro.  Where were you?  I’ve been doing standup for years and haven’t had a crowd like that.  Who was head-lining, bro?”   Obviously they think I created the videos for real and they’re trying to catch me admitting to using a laugh track (With these emails I had fun and typically answered back something like: “Wow.  Thanks for the email, bro.  You’re right the crowd was awesome that night.  I can’t believe the great response…” you get the idea).

I did get a couple of emails from people who had originally commented angrily on Reddit, then had read the video description and sent me an email:  “Hey, I posted an angry comment on reddit about your video (I never comment but your video got me so angry) but I read the description after I had shown it to a few friends and I’ve got to say you got me.  I total bought it.  Part of me wants to comment on reddit and let everyone know and part of me wants to just keep it going.  Great job…”

Anyways… it’s a fun joke, people are responding to it in funny and interesting ways, the only reason I’m even mentioning anything now is because of the emails I’ve gotten regarding it.  I get dozens of emails every week from veterans and family members of veterans looking for help and when I have to take time out of answering those emails to answer these, that’s where I draw the line with the joke.

Lesson learned:  People don’t read video descriptions.

PTSD – Success Stories

Throughout the years I’ve received hundreds, upon hundreds, of email from people asking questions about PTSD.  From what to do about it for themselves, to friends, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, etc.  And throughout the years I’ve answered all emails personally with my own thoughts on what each situation calls for, and have written several blog posts on the subject matter, and throughout the years I’ve received emails back saying that “this helped,” or “that helped,” in regards to PTSD.

Well, now it’s been several years, and I know that PTSD is still prevalent in our military, but I also know that it IS being addressed and that there ARE answers and options out there for veterans.  I’ve already received many emails from people who’ve successfully dealt with PTSD, but now I think it’s time to do an actual call for these emails and stories.   So…

If you or a loved one have dealt with PTSD in some form, and it’s gotten better and has been dealt with in a successful way, then please shoot me an email and share your story.  I’ll be putting together some of the stories for a series of future blog posts.

Thanks!

Michael

What to do if your Yahoo Email Account Gets Hacked!

yahoo account's been hackedRecently my Yahoo email account was hacked (sorry for anyone who got a spam email) it’s been happening more and more lately to friends and now it’s finally happened to me.  It’s an awful feeling to know that you’ve been hacked and all your contacts–business, and friends–have been sent links to porn sites (funny story about that in a second).

Here’s the steps to take if anyone else out there gets hacked by these bastards.

1)  Log into your account–if you still can.

2) Go to drop down bar and click on Account Info.

3) First, check your contact information.  This should be where you’ve put in an alternate email account and/or your phone number.  Hackers often change these to alternate email addresses, too.  Check those and make sure they’re still the ones you had placed there.

4) Then click on the link that says “change your password” and change your password.

5) Then click on “update password-reset info,” follow the steps.

6) Then click on “set up your second sign-in verification,” (this is supposed to make it hard for you to ever get hacked again–if you, or anyone else, tries to log onto your email account from an unknown computer then they won’t be able to.)

7) Click on “view your recent sign-in activity,” this will show you where you’ve been hacked from (I was hacked from Romania).

8) Send an apology email to all those on your list and let them know that you’ve been hacked.

And here’s the funny story.  A friend of mine, let’s call her Brittney, had just broken up with her long term boyfriend.  They had been together for almost seven years, and a week after they had broken up Brittney’s email had gotten hacked.  Well, this hacker sent out emails, but only to a handful of people in Brittney’s email list… but one of those people happened to be her ex-boyfriend.  And what do you think the spam email was for…. Penis Enlargement pills.  That’s right, a week after breaking up, Brittney’s ex-boyfriend received an email that said, “Here I think you need these…” and then there was a link to Penis Enlargement pills (and for those of you who think Brittney had done this as a joke and hadn’t really gotten hacked, the email also had gone to her uncle and a few other people too).

Anyways, hackers and spammers suck.

German War Poem: Translated by: Alexa Fleckenstein

German war poemA few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to talk with author Alexa Fleckenstein.  And somewhere, amongst our many topics of discussion, she began talking about an old German war poem, and given my background, she insisted on sharing the poem with me; and since she could not find an English translation, she translated it herself.  I figured that now, as we enter year twelve of the war in Afghanistan, was an appropriate time to share.  It is a beautiful poem and translation.  Read it below.

Erich Kästner: But when the next War seemed a certain fact

But when the next War seemed a certain fact,

The women said: No way!

And locked in brother, husband, son

And took the keys away.

In every country, every town, they stormed

Each sergeant’s, major’s, off’cer’s home,

And chased the guys, and got them tight,

And beat them with a broom.

They gave a beating to everyone who

had ordered to break the peace:

The bankers, brokers, ministers,

Generals and military police.

A lot of brooms were shattered then

And many a blowhard finished and done.

So many men cried, so many men whined.

The War was over before begun.

All that accomplished, the women went home

To brother, husband, son,

And said there was no War.

The men looked hard not in their eyes

But rather to the floor.

Profile Piece: Vegan Dad Interview

This week, instead of doing a typical blog entry, I decided to do a quick interview with John Potter.  He’s a father, vegan, and blogger at: VegDad.com.  What’s great about John’s story is that he’s a man who turned his life around, and it all started when he changed his diet.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and who you were pre-vegan:

I am 37 years old, happily married to my wife of 10 years Amanda. And I have two beautiful little girls Jewel and Jessie hence my website and nickname Vegdad. I am currently a human resources director for a non-profit health center in Oklahoma. I have worked as a graphic and web designer for 10+ years and just recently decided to make a career change for the better. Pre-vegan I was your typical soon to be middle aged dad just kinda going through the motions and eating whatever I wanted, although I will admit I was never a huge fan of pork.

Going vegan is a pretty big life decision, what was it that spurred you to change everything and become vegan?

First was my health. My blood pressure was climbing, and my weight was at almost 230 lbs. I was dealing with depression even though I did not realize it…. And I was drinking way too much alcohol. I knew I wasn’t being the best parent but had no idea how much my diet was actually contributing to my overall state of mind. I then came across the documentary “Forks over knives” on Amazon and rented it. I watched the movie on a Thursday and by the following Sunday I made the declaration to my wife and kids that I was going Vegan. I immediately purchased “The China Study” and read it cover to cover further reinforcing my commitment to my health.

How was the transition? Any bumps in the road? Any unexpected, but pleasant, experiences?

It was phenomenal. For me I began running and eventually won several 5k events and trained to a point where I could run 14 miles at one go. The only bumps was realizing that eating out was not going to be an option unless I made sure the menu had an item I could manipulate. Pleasant experiences are everywhere; I recently talked with Rich Roll via email about my transformation. It was a very humbling experience speaking with one of the top vegan athletes in the world. My energy has gone through the roof and I constantly am seeking new challenges physically… And by the way the food tastes a lot better!!!

I’ve noticed that every vegan has a go-to argument they use whenever talking to meat-eaters. What’s your, quick, go-to argument that you use whenever you’re talking to a meat-eater?

I show them a before and after pic, then challenge them to a 5 mile run…. lol… I also utilize the anatomy of a carnivore versus a human and then ask them to go eat a piece of carcass on the side of the road next time they say they are carnivores…. I always recommend “The China Study” as a fall back. I might not be a Dr., but that book is written by one of the only Dr.’s in the country that realizes the importance of a plant based diet.

Favorite two dishes as a vegan?

Lately I have been on a vegan gyro kick…. I have not completed a perfect recipe for it but plan on posting it on my website vegdad.com once I do. My other favorite and fall back food is an Amy’s bean and rice vegan burrito for convenience. I normally do not recommend prepackaged foods, however in this fast pace world it is hard to rely solely upon whole vegan meals without supplementing a little.

You’ve told us about your pre-vegan now tell us a little about your life as a vegan now, and what you’re up to?

As a vegan I have won several 5k events. I dropped a total of 62lbs. lowered my blood pressure to normal and as of lately I have committed to becoming a vegan body builder. I packed back on 20 lbs. of which 14-16lbs are lean muscle gains. I started my blog vegdad.com and with my bodybuilding background I have started seeing a huge interest in younger vegans wanting to get big on plant based protein. I am currently considering writing a book on how middle aged men should consider my journey for their families’ sake. My wife and kids have been awesome, and my children eat more vegetarian daily. I am not sure if it was my being vegan that led to me become a Buddhist or vice versa. All I know is that the good karma that is in my life right now is awesome and the compassion that I feel for my fellow human and animal brethren grows daily.

Any final tips for the new vegans out there?

Research, research, research! Don’t listen to the carnivores. If someone says you can’t survive on it, know that you can as long as you do it right. Chips and coke are vegan, however six months of eating that way you will become the stereotypical representative of vegans (sick and pale). Eat right, eat diversely, take a multi-vitamin, get exercise and support the cause, support the planet, and support the future. Vegan Power!
